Paint selection

Before parsing a question, how to paint a window, you need to familiarize yourself with the rules for choosing paint. For wooden and plastic frames, it is recommended to use materials for outdoor work or universal paints. Such products have moisture resistance and frost resistance. Means also withstand ultraviolet radiation and temperature changes. When choosing a paint, it is also taken into account for which surface the composition is used.

For PVC windows

If plastic structures need updating the coating, it is recommended to use coloring materials that are specifically designed for PVC. These include acrylic and polyurethane products. Such products are easy to apply, form a durable layer on the surface that protects the plastic from mechanical damage. Masters give preference to acrylic compositions, since such products are cheaper than polyurethane.

For wooden windows

To paint wooden windows, it is recommended to use the following types of paints:

  • Acrylic paints. Materials protect the surface from moisture, solar radiation, temperature changes and prevent the destruction of wood. The products are easy to apply and form a durable coating on the surface. The operational period is 5 years. Another advantage is the reasonable price.
  • Alkyd compounds. Used for interior and exterior decoration. Protect the tree from the negative effects of the environment. The material forms a coating on the surface, which is washed after solidification with conventional detergents.
  • Polyurethane paints. Means increase the wear resistance of wood and have increased strength. The disadvantage is the high price.
  • Nitrocellulose compounds. They have moisture resistance, vapor permeability and increased strength. The disadvantage is that acetone is included in the composition, therefore, during the use of the material, intoxication of the body occurs, if you do not use personal protective equipment. The disadvantage is the high cost of paint.

Surface preparation

Preparation of the building foundation consists in dismantling the old coating. The old paint is recommended to be removed from both wooden and plastic surfaces, if the frames have already been painted before.To do this, treat the base with a special liquid and leave for some time, which is indicated on the package. When the paint swells, take a spatula and remove the coating. Such a procedure can be done with your own hands even by a finisher without experience in construction work.

The next stage of preparation is degreasing and dust removal of the surface. For this, also use special tools that will ensure the cleanliness of the frame.

Remove the fittings so as not to stain the locks and handles during painting. It is also necessary to dismantle glazing beads if a wooden window is being restored.

Glass protection

Professional craftsmen take out the glass from the frames if they are staining. This is relevant only for wooden structures. Manipulation can not be performed if you protect the glass from paint: fix masking tape on the glass at a distance of 2 mm from the frame around the perimeter.

Frame restoration algorithm

If wooden windows are being restored, then before painting it is recommended to treat the surface with an antiseptic, apply a primer and putty. After this, a break is taken to dry the composition, the surface is cleaned and you can proceed to the finish.

Instructions for the restoration of windows made of PVC and wood:

  • treat the base with a primer and wait for the agent to dry;
  • stir the paint, pass through a metal sieve and dilute with a solvent so that a medium consistency product is obtained;
  • apply paint to the surface with a thin layer;
  • take a break to dry the composition;
  • paint the frame again and wait until the product hardens - this completes the finish of the plastic windows;
  • apply a third coat of paint to the wooden frame using a thicker composition.

If smudges appeared on the surface during the painting process, they must immediately be removed with a rag that is saturated with solvent, otherwise defects will remain that adversely affect the appearance of the finish.

Finish finish

The final stage of restoration is the removal of masking tape from the glass. It is recommended to dismantle it immediately after painting, without waiting for the product to solidify, otherwise defects will occur on the surface of the material. Next, wait for the paint to dry and return the hardware to its place. On the wooden frames, also fix the glazing beads.
