Which paint to choose

Professional craftsmen know what paint is best to paint wooden windows, but amateurs do not always choose the right material and encounter problems during work or after completion. To avoid this, it is recommended to choose a tool that has the following properties:

  • moisture resistance, so that precipitation does not spoil the finish coating or affect its technical characteristics;
  • the ability to protect the tree from the occurrence of fungus and mold;
  • elasticity for easy application;
  • vapor permeability so that air can circulate freely.

Such characteristics increase the operational period of restoration and eliminate the need to paint the windows annually.

Material classification, depending on the purpose

Depending on the purpose, several types of material are distinguished.

For indoor use

Such paints are used only indoors, so the materials are not used for painting window frames. Means are suitable for coloring window sills.

For outdoor use

Types of material

There are several types of paint for wood, which is recommended for use for painting windows.

Nitrocellulose formulations

Such paints are made on the basis of nitrocellulose. The material is easy to apply, has an attractive appearance and protects the tree from the negative effects of the environment. The main shade is white. Since this is the traditional color of window frames, such material is used for painting more often than others. The lack of funds - the composition includes acetone, because of which the paint has a pungent odor and causes intoxication of the body. For this reason, you cannot use the material without personal protective equipment.

Alkyd products

Compounds are recommended for use indoors and outdoors. Materials do not change characteristics under the influence of precipitation and sunlight. Protect the surface from temperature extremes. Paints are able to withstand temperatures from -50 to + 600C. The product must be washed after solidification. The material is able to withstand detergent treatment without loss of appearance. The disadvantage is the high price.

Acrylic materials

Tools are made on the basis of acrylic resins. Suitable for all types of surfaces, including wood.Paints have moisture resistance, vapor permeability and protective properties. Shelf life of the coating is five years. Such paints are preferred by most professionals and amateurs performing restoration with their own hands.

Polyurethane paints

Such compositions have increased strength. Materials increase the operational period of wood. Coverage does not need frequent updates. Restoration is performed once every seven years.

Lucky

Such materials form a transparent coating on the surface. Due to this, the texture of the tree is not masked by shades. At the same time, the varnish protects the building base from an aggressive biological environment, that is, mold and fungus, moisture and sunlight. Such a coating has a long operational period, which allows for restoration once every several years.

Paints for different types of wood

When choosing a coloring agent, it is also recommended to take into account the type of wood:

  • larch - the material itself is able to withstand the effects of moisture, ultraviolet radiation and temperature changes, so paints with simple characteristics are used to restore this wood frame;
  • pine - the frame of this material quickly absorbs moisture, which creates a favorable environment for the occurrence of mold and fungus, therefore it is recommended to use only moisture-resistant agents with protective properties against the formation of an unfavorable bacterial environment for staining;
  • oak - this material is not afraid of moisture, but is subject to the action of pests, therefore it is recommended to use a material with protective properties for staining, and before applying the product, treat the substrates with a special tool that prevents the action of pests.

Methods for dismantling the old coating

Paint cannot be applied to an old covering therefore it is recommended to dismantle it. There are several ways to do this:

  • Heat treatment. The essence of the method is the impact on a building base with a stream of hot air from an industrial hair dryer or blowtorch. After such manipulation, the coating will swell and be easily removed with a spatula. The disadvantage is that you need to remove the glass from the frame, because it will burst due to the high temperature.
  • Grinding. To remove the paint, use any tool to clean the surface. The frame is machined with this tool and the coating is dismantled.
  • Special substance. In construction stores, paint remover is sold. The product is applied to the surface and left for a time that indicates the packaging. Under the influence of a substance, the paint swells and is removed with a spatula.
