How to choose a remedy?

Paint for windows must satisfy the following conditions:

  • water resistance so that precipitation cannot spoil either the coating itself or the wood
  • vapor permeability, so that the material passes air, preventing the debate of the building base and the emergence of an environment favorable for the occurrence of fungus and mold;
  • elasticity, so that the composition lies flat on the surface, and there are no problems when processing the base.

Products for interior and exterior decoration

For restoration of windows in the room, you can use paint for interior decoration. Such work is rarely performed, since they prefer to paint the entire frame at once. Restoration is done indoors if defects have appeared on the surface.

To paint the entire structure or only outside the premises, it is recommended to use material for external decoration. The tool is not afraid of weather changes and steadily perceives precipitation, frost and exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The surface will not change its color even after prolonged exposure to the sun.

If restoration of windows is planned, but the paint is taken with a margin for painting over possible defects, it is recommended to use a universal tool (as in the photo below), which is suitable for interior and exterior repair of window frames. The product does not respond to weather changes, provides hygroscopicity and vapor permeability of the surface.

Classification of the composition

When choosing a material for painting wooden frames, it is important to consider not only the purpose of the product, but also the composition. Paint is classified as follows:

  • Alkyd materials. Means do not respond to environmental changes, and protect the tree from moisture, temperature extremes, sunlight and mechanical damage. The coating can be washed with heavy soiling. To do this, it is recommended to use detergents. The minus of the product is a great price.
  • Nitrocellulose materials. Such products are used for interior and exterior decoration. The product forms a durable coating on the surface that protects the tree from negative environmental effects and wear. The disadvantage is the presence of acetone in the composition. Due to such a solvent, the product causes intoxication of the body. For this reason, staining with this composition is carried out only in a ventilated room.
  • Acrylic products. Are in high demand among finishers. Materials have an affordable price and create a high-quality durable coating.
  • Polyurethane products. The materials have increased wear resistance, so this coating will last for several years. This finish is considered one of the best for wood. The disadvantage of polyurethane-based products is their high cost.
  • Lacquer. Such material is used to cover high-quality new wood. The product forms a transparent coating on the surface through which the texture of the material is visible.

Wooden windows are also painted with oil paints, but such materials are inferior in properties to modern means.

Terms of restoration

It is recommended to stain windows at temperatures from +5 to +300C, but the best option is from +18 to +250C. At this temperature, the material quickly hardens. Paint is applied only to dry wood. If the material is wet, then under the paint layer decay will begin and the frame will be worthless. It will not be possible to restore it, you will have to completely change the design. For this reason, staining is done only in clear sunny weather, which lasted for several days. It is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the weather the next day, since the paint should dry under the same conditions as the restoration.

To stain the window you will need:

Restoration Rules

When finishing with your own hands is performed by an unprofessional master, he is recommended to familiarize himself with all the nuances of the restoration.

Foundation preparation

Do not apply paint to an old coating - one of the main rules for painting windows. If the finish is old, it is recommended to remove it with a spatula. Such manipulation cannot be performed if the paint fits snugly to the base. To remove it, you will have to use special tools - a building hair dryer or a remover for paint from wood. After using these materials, the coating is easily dismantled.

If the frame gets wet during the removal of old paint, wait until the surface dries. After that, treat the building base with an antiseptic solution. Finishing continues after complete absorption of the material.

Using paint remover

Preparation of glass and fittings

To prevent the glass from getting dirty with paint, it is recommended to stick masking tape on the area near the frame. Remove the accessories. If any locks or handles do not lend themselves, cover these parts with plastic wrap. Such material will protect the hardware from paint.

Primer frame

If you use a primer with antiseptic properties to prime the frame, you can not use a disinfecting solution. The material itself will protect the tree from mold and fungus.

The primer is applied twice. The first time after preparation of the building foundation, the second after puttying. The purpose of the primer treatment is to increase the adhesion of the material and surface. The primer is applied to the tree in one layer. The next finishing step is performed only after the material has dried.

Putty application

To putty the window frame, use only material that is specifically designed for wood. Use a ready-made composition that does not need preparation.

Putty instructions:

  • inspect the frame for defects and seal them with putty;
  • apply the material to the surface with a thin layer;
  • pause the finish to dry the product;
  • process the surface with sandpaper;
  • brush the base with a broom or brush;
  • apply a primer and wait until the material dries;
  • if one layer of putty is not enough to level the surface, re-treat the frame and repeat the operations of stripping and priming.

Dyeing

Paint technique:

  • stir the paint and pass it through a metal sieve, measuring in the container the amount of the product that is required for painting;
  • add solvent - for the first layer make a liquid consistency of the layer;
  • stir the composition and apply to the surface;
  • interrupt work to dry the material;
  • prepare another portion of the material with a thicker consistency and apply the composition to the frame;
  • take another break to dry the paint;
  • the next portion of the paint should be even thicker;
  • apply the product on the surface and wait for the material to solidify;
  • fix glazing beads on the frame using small nails;
  • remove the masking tape from the glasses and install the accessories.
