Types of paint

To color the windows, you can use different types of funds.

Acrylic

Such paints are water-based products containing polymers. The composition is water resistant, so the product is used even for external work. The paint is not afraid of ultraviolet radiation. This means that a window painted with acrylics will not change its color under the influence of sunlight. The coating after drying is allowed to wash. The advantage of acrylic compositions is high drying speed, ease of use, lack of unpleasant odor and affordable price.

Alkyd

Such paints are made on the basis of resins and oils. The compositions are easy to apply and have good penetration. The material creates a waterproofing surface. The paint protects the tree from moisture for four years after applying the product. The product also provides surface protection against temperature extremes and the negative effects of ultraviolet radiation. Such a coating may be washed. The disadvantage of the paint is its high cost and slow drying. In addition, before using the product, the product is diluted with a pungent odor, such as white spirit.

Oil

These paints do not have good penetration, but provide waterproofing of the surface. Advantages - low consumption and lack of unpleasant odor. The product is not diluted with solvents, so it is used immediately after opening the can. The disadvantage is the slow drying speed. The composition freezes in three days.

Surface preparation

Preparation of window frames is an important stage of decoration. The result of the restoration depends on its implementation.

Instructions for preparing the surface for painting:

  • Remove the windows from the hinges for easy operation. If this is not done, then some parts of the window frames will remain unpainted. Remove the handles from the frames or cover with masking tape if they do not need to be painted.
  • Remove the old coating. This can be done in several ways - with a spatula, sandpaper, a construction hairdryer (as in the photo below), a special liquid, etc. You can remove the paint by any method, the main thing is to completely clean the frame.
  • Strip the surface. To do this, first use the sandpaper P 60, and then P 100 or P 120.
  • If there are cracks, indentations, etc. on the frame, repair the defects with putty. To do this, first clean the defects, apply a primer and wait until the product dries. After that, fill the crack with putty. When the composition hardens, clean the material with sandpaper P 100 or P 120.
  • Treat the frame with an antiseptic. This will protect the tree from mold and mildew. The tool can not be used if the primer, which is applied by the next layer, has antiseptic properties.
  • Primer the frame. Apply the composition in two layers with a break for drying.
  • Seal the glass next to the frame with masking tape. This will protect it from paint.

Professionals also advise replacing glazing beads if the frame is old.

Painting wooden frames

If we talk about how to paint wooden windows, proceed as follows:

  • Strain the material through a metal sieve. This will save paint from lumps. If you pass this stage of the work, then when applying paint, interspersed with it will adversely affect the final result of the finish.
  • Apply paint to the frame with a thin brush. Follow the direction along the wood fibers.
  • Pause work to harden paint. The drying time of the composition is indicated on the packaging.
  • Apply a second coat of product. Make sure that smudges do not appear, as this is the final coating.
  • After the paint has dried, fix the frame in the window opening.

Window frames are not painted in rainy weather. Increased humidity will lead to the appearance of bubbles under the paint layer, which will negatively affect the appearance of the finish and cause the need for repeated restoration.
