Glass Wallpaper Features

Cullets are a special material that has in common with ordinary wallpaper only the gluing process. Such a canvas is made by joining glass fibers, which are obtained from a special type of glass, melting it at high temperature.

Specific manufacturing technology makes it possible to obtain a canvas with an organic beautiful ornament and texture, which allows you to hide after application various small surface defects that may be noticeable during normal painting. Fiberglass wallpaper is similar in structure to fabric.

The material acquires an unusual surface because of its composition, which includes:

  • Sand.
  • Clay.
  • Limestone.
  • Other environmentally friendly natural materials.

There are two types of cullet:

  • Smooth, which are called fiberglass or "spider web." Such wallpapers are used, most often, for:
  1. sealing surfaces;
  2. concealment of small cracks, small irregularities and other defects;
  3. alignment before painting the walls. In appearance, the canvas is a painting fiberglass, resembling a web, which has reinforcing properties and is used as a decorative material.
  • Embossed.

This type of material is used for the final finishing of surfaces, their density is much higher than that of smooth wallpapers, they are less at risk of being stretched or torn during operation.

The texture of glass is directly dependent on the method of their manufacture. When using ordinary machines, the textured pattern takes on the form of geometric shapes: rhombuses, Christmas trees, and others. On jacquard looms, the textured image takes on a more sophisticated and complex look.

Tip: There are other options for getting a picture. In any case, which one to choose depends on the imagination of the owner of the room. Everyone chooses the combination of shades on the glass wall on their own.

Such wallpapers go on sale in rolls, one meter wide. Usually one roll is enough for 50 squares, but with proper gluing in the corners, some of the material may remain unused.

The advantages of cullet are:

  • They can be painted.

The textured surface of the material allows you to apply special paints on it. This makes the walls brighter, increases the strength of the coating. Cullet can be repainted up to two dozen times, while maintaining excellent shape and texture.

  • Provide fire safety.

Processing the glass fibers of the material with a special fire-resistant solution, resistant to high temperatures, allows the use of wallpaper in tropical countries and in the kitchen, close to heat sources.

  • They do not deform under the influence of moistureDo not interfere with air circulation.
  • Ecological purity of material.

For its manufacture, natural components are used that have hypoallergenic properties, absolutely without harming human health.

  • Wear resistance. Wallpaper life exceeds 25 years.
  • Resistance to electricity, do not accumulate a charge in themselves, which prevents the collection of dust on the walls.

Such advantages contribute to the fact that in the end the price of coverage will not be too high.

There are some disadvantages of cullet:

  • They may crumble or break in your hands.

Tip: When purchasing material, you should pay attention to the fragility of the canvas. Very brittle indicate poor workmanship.

  • It may be difficult to remove wallpaper from the surface.
  • Low ductility, which requires before the sticker to make the surface perfectly smooth, otherwise they may crack.
  • Do-it-yourself walls require more paint.

What glue to use for glass

Tip: Do not use ordinary wallpaper glue or heavy types of cloths for decals. They are not intended for a large mass of material, it will not hang securely on the walls.

Manufacturers of such coatings, most often, offer a special adhesive composition, which is easily diluted with water. In its absence, the glue used for fiberglass is selected.

Glue happens:

  • Liquid.
  • Powder.

An integral part of this substance is modified starch, which is used to impregnate fiberglass.

Tip: With a very porous surface that absorbs liquid strongly, more water should be added to the glue.

There are cullets, originally having an adhesive layer. In this case, it must be wetted with water and glued to the wall. Some mixtures in the composition have special additives.

They are:

  • Increase drying speed.
  • Becoming a great indicator of moisture resistance.
  • Prevent the occurrence of fungus and various parasites.

The advantage of a decorative coating for wall decoration is that without a pattern, the glass can be laid in different directions, not withstanding a special order.

On ready-made surfaces, joints will not stand out, which is very convenient when:

  • Fiberglass mechanical damage.
  • Incorrect cutting of the purchased roll.
  • Apply the remaining tape from the previous roll.
  • Material saving.

Tip: Particular attention should be paid to the reliability of gluing the edges of the fiberglass, otherwise it may break. In this case, the damaged part of the strip must be cut off and then the remaining piece glued.

After gluing the cullet, glue diluted with water is applied on top of them, which will further simplify the application of paint. Strips remain for a day to dry. What is better to buy cullet for painting, how to glue them correctly on the walls, the video will tell you in detail.

How to glue glass on the ceiling

The surface of the ceiling, like the walls, must be properly prepared for gluing:

  • Aligned.
  • Puttied.
  • Primed.

Further:

  • Cloths are cut.
  • Glue is applied to the surface.
  • Strips are applied.
  • The surface remains to dry.

Cullets are glued at room temperature, with an air humidity of not more than 75%. After finishing work, the surface should dry, and then paint is applied. Cullets are painted with any type of paint.

Is it possible to glue the cullet on the paint? In case of problematic paint removal, it is necessary to treat painted surfaces with an emery cloth or a sanding machine, and then primer.

The gluing of wallpaper on the paint depends on:

  • The type of paint that the wall is painted on. If the wall is painted with oil paint, it is not recommended to leave it, under such a coating the wall does not breathe and putrefactive and mold phenomena begin to develop, which will eventually lead to the breakdown of glass.
  • The state of this paint coat. Even in perfect condition, the surface should be treated:
  1. sandpaper first;
  2. primer;
  3. You can glue wallpaper.

It is necessary to remove the paint in order to prevent the coating from showing through the wallpaper. Sticking glass on the walls pleases its owner with the appearance and properties that will save in the future on repairs.
