Oil-and-glue putty Nova for internal works

To prepare the base for decorative finishing, to fix defects, to make it even and smooth, its putty is necessary. It’s not a problem to find materials for this - there are a lot of them, they are different: special, universal, for indoor and outdoor use.
This article will discuss what oil-glue putty is - technical characteristics of the material, its properties, scope, etc.

About Material

According to the current GOST 10277 90, any putty is a viscous thick mass, the basis of which is various binders with the addition of pigments and improving the properties of the filler material.

The composition of the oil-adhesive putty

The binder of the described material is drying oil.
As fillers are:

  • Glue KMTS;
  • A piece of chalk;
  • Plasticizers, providing ease of application of the composition to the surface;
  • Desiccants, accelerating the drying of oils;
  • Water.

Also, each manufacturer plant can introduce various modifying additives, thickeners, antiseptic substances and pigments into its product composition, which give the putty a certain color.

Characteristics

Oil-glue putties are used for internal work. Mostly for leveling wooden, plastered and concrete surfaces intended for painting with enamels, oil and water-dispersion paints (see.Paint for interior wall decoration: how to choose).
Oil-glue putty - technical specifications:

For reference. Each manufacturer of such putty produces products that meet the technical specifications accepted at the factory, so the characteristics may vary slightly.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main advantage of the material is that this putty is universal - its technical characteristics, composition and good adhesion make it possible to use it to level and eliminate defects on different surfaces, from plastered or drywall walls to wooden window frames, door blocks and floors (see.Floor finish: types of material).
Other advantages include its following properties:

  • Plasticity, ease of application and processing;
  • Fast drying, reducing technological breaks between different stages of finishing work;
  • Durability;
  • Harmless composition, environmental friendliness;
  • Low price - in comparison with other putties, oil-glue is the cheapest.

This material also has drawbacks, and quite serious ones, which do not allow it to be used for outdoor work and surface finishes experiencing high mechanical stress and moisture.
As already clear from the above, the disadvantages of this composition include:

  • Insufficiently high strength and resistance to mechanical damage;
  • Instability to high humidity and direct exposure to moisture;
  • Short shelf life - during prolonged storage, the material loses its plasticity. And with prolonged exposure to low temperatures or repeated freezing, it generally becomes unusable.

It should also be borne in mind that this putty is quite demanding on the conditions of application: the instruction recommends working with it at a temperature not lower than 10-15 degrees (optimal temperature 20-22 degrees) and air humidity not higher than 65-70%.

Scope of putty
The scope of putty is limited to dry rooms.

Application technology

Before you begin, review the safety requirements. Apply the paste in a ventilated area, protecting the skin of the hands with rubber gloves.

Note. Oil compounds light up easily, therefore they cannot be kept near an open flame.

Preparatory stage

Carefully inspect the surface. If there are large cracks and other defects with a depth of more than 4-5 mm, they must be plastered. After the solution dries, the entire area intended for finishing is primed.

If the surface is covered with a layer of old oil paint, it should be cleaned as much as possible of the lagging coating with a rough skin, then cleaned of dust and primed (seePrimer consumption per 1 m2 - approximate data for determining the required volume).

For reference. As a primer, you can use pure drying oil or diluted with water in a ratio of 6: 1 latex.

The material is mixed thoroughly after opening the package. If you got too thick a putty universal - GOST allows dilution of it with linseed oil to the desired consistency.

Main stage

After preparation, dedusting, degreasing and priming the surface must be allowed to dry. Then putty in the usual way, using a metal or rubber spatula. It is easy to apply with your own hands due to its plasticity and the ability to independently bring the mixture to a consistency that is convenient for you.
Putty is applied with a layer of no more than 2 mm. If it is not enough for leveling, then the desired number of layers is performed, but each must be hardened before applying the next one.
To do this, it is enough to wait 3-4 hours, and lay the repeated layer in the direction perpendicular to the previous one, after grinding and dust removal of the surface.

Putty application
It is easy and convenient to work with the material even for a beginner

For a perfectly flat base after finishing putty it is sanded with fine sandpaper or a grater 7-8 hours after the end of work.
The final hardening of the surface occurs in 24 hours - after this time, the putty acquires its true strength, and grinding will be much more difficult.
So that oil stains do not subsequently appear through the decorative finish, the putty base must be primed again using any deep penetration primer.

Conclusion

The video in this article will give you additional information on how to properly putty surfaces. In the case of oil-glue putty, the task is facilitated by the simplicity of its application. That is why it is appreciated by professional builders and those who rarely perform such work. Try it and you.
