Painting wooden window frames
Wooden windows are classic designs that users prefer, despite a wide range of plastic profiles. The main disadvantage of such frames is the rapid wear of the coating. The decoration has to be regularly updated, which leads to additional costs and loss of time. In order to preserve the coloring of wooden frames for a long time, it is recommended to entrust the restoration to professionals or to perform work in accordance with the relevant rules.

Rules for painting wooden windows:
- Perform restoration in the spring-summer period when warm, clear weather without rains is established. Suitable air temperature - from +5 to +300WITH.
- Before restoration, repair defects using putty. If the frame is deformed, repair the structure.
- Do not apply materials until the previous product dries. Take a break after each treatment.
- Make a multilayer coating. This will increase the operational period of the finish.
- Apply the paint evenly, do not allow smudges. If such imperfections appear, immediately eliminate them using a solvent rag. If smudges dry, the finish will suffer.
- Do not dip the brush completely into the paint. The composition will drain from above and smudges will form on the surface. Immerse the brush in the paint halfway and slide the tool along the edge of the can to remove excess.
- Brush from top to bottom. Do strokes in one direction.
- Make the first layer thin. If you apply a lot of paintwork material at once, then irregularities will arise and the restoration will have to be performed again.
- Use a thinner to dilute the paint. The tool will help to achieve the desired consistency of the paint material, which will allow you to adjust the thickness of the layers.
- During staining, use personal protective equipment (as in the photo below). This is true in cases where work is carried out in a poorly ventilated area and toxic materials are used.
Necessary materials and tools
Before you start, take care of the following materials and tools:
- paintwork;
- primer with antiseptic properties;
- wood putty;
- solvent;
- White Spirit;
- degreaser;
- grinder or grater with mesh for surface cleaning;
- brushes of different sizes;
- narrow spatula;
- metal sieve;
- tools for dismantling accessories and glazing beads;
- masking tape;
- glazing beads;
- ladder;
- container for paint and primer;
- brush to remove dust.
How to prepare the frame for decoration?
To paint the wooden window correctly, prepare the building foundation. Remove old paint from the surface. Use a special wash or industrial hair dryer for this. If the paint is old and barely adheres to the frame, remove it with a spatula. When dismantling the old coating, be careful. Act so as not to violate the integrity of the frame, otherwise the structure will have to be repaired.
After removing the paint, evaluate the condition of the wood. If there are any damaged areas, remove them with a knife.
Brush the surface to remove dust. Then degrease the building foundation using a special tool or water. Dry the frames.
Cover the glass near the frame with masking tape to protect it from paint. Remove the locks and handles so that the fittings do not interfere with the painting process. If any part is not removed, you do not need to try to tear it off, otherwise damage the frame. Protect it from paint by wrapping with masking tape.
Remove glazing beads and dispose of them. Coat new parts with a primer and two coats of paint. Set aside until frame restoration is complete.
Putty and primer
For priming the frame, two types of material are used - a primer for metal and for wood. The first to process all the metal parts that you find on the frame are studs and others. Apply wood primer directly to the surface itself. Use an antiseptic agent. This product will prevent mold and mildew on the frame. After each application, take a break so that the product has time to dry. The recommended number of treatments is 2.
If damaged areas are removed during foundation preparation, restore surface integrity with putty. The composition also fill in all defects. Wait for the material to harden. Treat the putty with a special grater and prime the material. After drying, spread a thin layer of putty on the frame. When the material hardens, clean the surface to level the base and get rid of the stains that remain from the spatula. Apply a primer coat. If necessary, repeat puttying if the surface is not leveled. After drying, grind and primer again.
Paint application
Instructions for applying paintwork material:
- Open a container of paint, take a wooden stick and mix the product. Strain the material through a sieve into a clean container, but not completely, but as much as you need for one frame treatment. Add solvent and stir. The consistency should be liquid, but not so that it drains from the surface, but lies flat on the base.
- Apply paint to the frames. Take a break to dry the product.
- Make a thick solution and treat the product with a surface. If desired, lay the third layer after the second has dried.

Old paint finish
How to paint wooden windows according to old paint - such a question arises only among amateurs. Professionals know that this cannot be done and the old coating must be dismantled. If you ignore this stage of decoration, the old paint will fall off with the new material a few months after the restoration.
