Using a spray gun, large surfaces can be coated much faster than previously used tools - brushes and a roller. In addition, walls, floors or ceilings will be painted evenly, thinly and smoothly.
Spray guns come in two types, the devices differ in appearance, design and principle of operation:
- Pneumatic In such spray guns, a sprayer and a barrel are supplied with a receiver and a compressor, which forcing air into the sprayer, breaks the paint into small particles under high pressure, and then pushes it out of the nozzle, which forms a painting torch.
- Electric. The design of the spray guns has a built-in pump. When working, it does not form such tiny particles and the coating painted by it will not be as ideal. But, their advantages:
- compactness;
- light weight;
- lower price, which made the device more popular. The set of electric spray guns includes a large number of adjustments and modes.
By type of spray guns are:
- Airless.
- Pneumatic.
- Combined.
Airless and combined are characterized by low cost, low paint consumption and high performance, but the disadvantage is that the coating is not too high quality. Industry produces hand spray guns.

How to prepare paint for a spray gun
Before properly painting with a spray gun, it is necessary to prepare paints and varnishes or other compositions for work. Not all paints are equally suitable for the spray gun. There is a special instruction that indicates how to dilute the paint for the spray gun.
Thick paint must be filtered and diluted. Viscosity for a paint spray gun determines the quality of work.
At the same time, environmental factors such as:
- Air humidity.
- Ambient temperature.
Tip: When purchasing paint, you should not completely trust the information that is listed in the instruction manual on the manufacturer's can. Average values are shown here under normal temperature conditions, approximately 20 ° C. When using any composition, its consistency is determined empirically.At low temperatures, the paint will be thicker, with hotter, the composition becomes more liquid.
Paint preparation for spray gun:
- A certain amount of paint is poured into the spray tank.
- A less visible area is painted with a tool to check spray quality. The composition should pass through the nozzle evenly, creating an air stream with small drops.
- When spraying liquid in large drops or it does not spray at all, 5% of the appropriate solvent is added to the tank, which is recommended by the paint and remote control manufacturers.
- The mixture is thoroughly mixed.
- The spray quality of the resulting composition is checked.
- If necessary, the mixture is improved with a solvent until the stream is uniform and constant. Ideally, the jet should be directed "fog".
Tip: Without loss of quality, paints with organic solvents should be diluted a little more than half. And compositions made on a water basis can be diluted with no more than 10% pure water.
- When diluting the composition, it is important that there is no excess of solvent, which will lead to a decrease in the film thickness and a decrease in the strength of the coating.
- If the first layer of paint during spraying turned out to be beautiful, and the second began to go down with roughness, not stretching into a smooth surface, this indicates that the paint had time to thicken in 15-20 minutes.
Tip: Before applying the next coat, you should check the viscosity of the composition at the test site and make adjustments if necessary.
How to prepare a spray gun for work
Before working with a spray gun, it must be properly assembled with your own hands.
For this:
- The handle and the selected nozzle are attached to the body of the device, which rotates until they click.
- The air hose is connected.
Tip: When assembling the structure, make sure that the hoses are not kinked or pinched, otherwise the supply of paint will be difficult.
- Adjusts the position of the nozzle in a vertical and horizontal position.
- The controller is adjusted, allowing, if necessary, to change the pressure of the composition.
How to paint textured wallpapers
The airbrush can be used for coloring beautiful textured wallpapers, which will give them attractiveness and beautiful appearance.
When painting:
- All surfaces, sockets and switches are protected with masking tape so that the paint does not damage them. Before that, their bodies are carefully removed and the holes sealed.
- Wires are shielded to prevent injury.
- Protected door and window openings, baseboards, not subject to staining.

- Before work, two test strokes are done to determine the uniformity of the surface and the required shade.
- The spray gun must be kept strictly at an angle of 90 °.
- The surface is coated in smooth movements, starting from the top to the floor, not lingering for a long time in one place, otherwise the convex elements will retain the paint on themselves.
- Corners are more carefully processed.
- When staining, you need to ensure that there are no stained places left.
How to paint with a spray gun on plaster
You can also paint plastered surfaces with a spray gun.
In this case, it is enough to perform several fairly simple operations:
- A capacity of approximately 10 liters is being prepared.
- A pigment is squeezed out of a tube.
- White paint is added.
- The composition is well mixed until a homogeneous consistency is obtained.
- If necessary, the composition is diluted with water and mixed again.
- A spray head is attached to the equipment.
- Several test strokes are done to determine the degree of spraying.
- The surfaces are painted.
- The spray gun should be kept at a distance of 200 millimeters from the wall. The hand should be placed evenly, inclined movements are not allowed.
- When painting areas near window openings, masking tape is used to protect the frames, and it is better to place the nozzle at an angle, moving it from the middle to the corners.
- The movements should be smooth and even.
Tip: In this case, you can’t rush, but you shouldn’t do everything too slowly, so that there are no streaks of paint, which are quite difficult to get rid of.
How to spray paint stencil
On the walls, beautiful drawings and patterns can be applied using a stencil, which you can make yourself or purchase ready-made ones.
The order of work is as follows:
- The design of the surface base is carried out, most often:
- painting;
- Wallpapering;
- applying a plaster layer.
- The stencil is securely attached. This is especially important for rough or uneven surfaces, textured wallpaper. If it contains several parts, they must be glued butt. At the same time, the edges of the picture should be firmly pressed against the wall so as not to reduce the image quality.
Next, the painting itself is performed:
- The spray gun applies the selected paint to the area of the drawing.
Tip: So that the paint does not fall under the edges of the stencil, the flow should be set to a minimum.
- The paint is applied to the stencil in one smooth, but fairly quick movement.
- After setting the coating, but not completely drying it, the stencil is carefully removed so as not to damage the paint layer, as in the photo.
- After finishing work with one stencil, other parts of the wall are painted. In this case, you need to use several copies of the stencils at the same time, which are stained at a time.
- When the surface of the wall is ready, it can be covered with colorless varnish, which will provide better fixing of the picture.
Problems encountered when painting with a spray gun
When working with a spray gun for painting walls, some problems arise:
- First of all, you need to clearly learn how to prepare the paint for the spray gun correctly.
- Smudges may appear at the edges of the coating due to too much air flow. To eliminate the error, the air flow should be made smaller or a more viscous composition should be used to refuel the spray gun.
- Abundant streaks may appear on the wall, due to the excess flow of the composition that passes through the nozzle. It is necessary to reduce the flow empirically. You may need to make the air stream a bit stronger.
- After applying the paint, the stain looks dusty. This problem most often occurs due to too high viscosity of the paint. This reason is eliminated by diluting the paint to a suitable working consistency, which is achieved experimentally.
