Whitewashing or painting the ceiling

Is it possible to paint the ceiling on whitewash? Despite the existence of modern methods of decorating ceilings, many use their whitewashing using chalk or lime mortar. But, such a process is quite laborious and not too pleasant.

To facilitate the work, often use mechanized methods of painting, using special sprayers or conventional vacuum cleaners. However, recently, owners of apartments and houses have been wondering if it is possible to paint the ceiling by whitewashing? The article will tell you the answer to this question.

How to refresh a whitewashed ceiling

If during the repair of the room, the ceiling looks pretty decent, but you want to refresh it, then before painting the whitewashed ceiling, you will need to perform a set of measures.

Painting after whitewashing the ceiling is possible only with the composition applied earlier:

• When using chalk, to restore such a coating, it is simply washed off and repainted.
• After applying plaster and lime, surface finishing operations will be more.

Is it possible to paint the ceiling for whitewashing? Such solutions are also possible in some situations.

For this:

• It is necessary to determine how old the whitewash is firmly held on the surface, and whether there are any lagging areas of the coating from the floor slab.
• In the absence of cracks and such places, the ceiling can be repainted.

Tip: Apply a new coating to the ceiling on top of the old one only in extreme cases. Even the most durable finishing material, over time, will begin to lose its properties, and will begin to crumble.

How to prepare a ceiling for painting

First of all, a finger is drawn along the ceiling along the plane:

• If the finger turned white, then chalk was used - it gets dirty more.
• If the hand remains clean - lime was applied, it will not tolerate simple repainting, but will simply crumble. Such a coating should be completely removed from the plane.
• When applied to the surface of an aqueous emulsion, the old coating is previously removed in places where it lags from the surface. This is done with a spatula and various chemical compounds.

To paint the ceiling after the old chalk coating, you must:

• Soak the ceiling and partially rinse with plain warm water.
• Remove the entire layer with an ordinary spatula, as in the photo.

• The ceiling is painted.

To remove the lime coating, you will need a spatula to remove all lagging areas of the coating. In this case, it is also impossible to skip the small lagging areas, otherwise, when applying a new coating layer, in this place it can easily "wrap" on the roller.

On a previously painted ceiling, paint may remain on the surface, but it must also be preliminarily rolled with a wet roller to determine its lag from the ceiling. If such areas are found, they are cleaned with a spatula, to the concrete slab.

After cleaning the ceiling, you must:

• Primer the surface. In this case, special attention is paid to the seams and joints of the plates on the ceiling. They are previously thoroughly cleaned of all old materials. And then with a brush all such places and the entire main plane are primed.

Tip: At this stage of work, on the plane, areas are revealed where old layers of paint or whitewash, which have not been noticed before, may lag. They should be thoroughly cleaned and primed before concrete.

• Close up all the flaws. At any repair, at least small, but surface defects appear. They are sealed with putty, and then the surface is leveled with a special grater, on which a metal mesh is attached. A primer layer is also applied on the putty areas.

Tip: When purchasing an airbrush for painting the ceiling with your own hands, you need to choose it in accordance with the size of the room area and the type of paint used. The cost of the tool is different, which depends on its power.

Instructions for use of spray guns:

• No special knowledge is required to use the tools. The main thing is to strain the paint composition well.Otherwise, the nozzle of the tool periodically will simply clog.

To do this, you can take:

1. a metal or kapron strainer with a small cell;
2. a gauze filter from many layers or use the old grandfather method - kapron stocking.

Tip: The composition should be filtered as best as possible, this will increase the quality of the spray. First you need to adapt, choose the most optimal distance for the placement of the spray gun.

With increasing viscosity of the coating composition, the spraying intensity becomes greater. But, excess pressure in the spray gun can have a negative impact on the quality of the applied coating.

• In modern spray guns, the design provides for the adjustment of the length of the jet and the speed of its discharge. When painting the ceiling, the optimum stream length should be within 50 centimeters.

Spray paint or primer evenly. To avoid influxes, you can not stay in one place for a long time. In this case, the tool should be parallel to the surface to be painted, and the trajectory of its movement should be smooth.

• The blemishes that were allowed when applying the paint must be corrected immediately, until the coating has dried. The stream of paint should be directed to the base in one direction, avoiding randomness.
  When applying the first layer longitudinally, the second should be transverse, which will achieve uniformity. Each next layer is performed only after the previous one dries.
• It is impossible to put viscous paint repeatedly in one place. After drying, a layer of paint will begin to exfoliate here. The same can happen if the paint is applied to a poorly primed base.

To fix such a defect, you need to sand the exfoliated areas, then primer and tint. This should be done at least twice so that patches are not allocated.

When deciding whether it is possible to paint a whitewashed ceiling, it must be borne in mind that this is possible only in rare cases. Most often, a complete removal of the old whitewash is required, and the best solution is a new finish on the entire ceiling, which will eliminate all the flaws and complete repainting.
