Is it possible to putty and primer chipboard under the wallpaper

Alexander Vorobyov

Please tell me whether it is possible to primer and putty chipboard under the wallpaper? (The house is made using frame technology, the walls of the chipboard are sheathed inside). Or do you need to wind up the drywall first? And only then putty? How will putty behave? Do not fall off with the wallpaper?

Chipboards, they are also chipboard, can be primed and putty before gluing. Yes there, even necessary. Despite the fact that wallpaper made of paper, vinyl or non-woven is usually glued to a cleaned surface without special preparation. Only in this case we are talking about plastered walls - even and providing adhesion to the surface. Resins, with the addition of which they make chipboard, will prevent the strips from seizing.

Here are some other problems that the putty of chipboard under the wallpaper helps to solve:

  • level the surface, eliminating chips and scratches on the plate;
  • save glue, which will be absorbed a lot into the porous unprocessed particleboard, and in a short time; unplastered surface will have to be covered with adhesive composition many times;
  • prevent peeling of strips in corner sections, at joints.

For chipboard, I recommend taking a putty based on acrylic or oil. Such compounds are flexible, therefore more suitable for wood materials. You can make the solution yourself from a dry mixture, but it is easier to purchase ready-made. Putty prepared and applied according to the technology will not fall off the wall.

Primed in 2 layers of wood boards is necessary to increase the adhesion of materials. For these purposes, we choose a composition that penetrates deeply into the structure. As a rule, the primer of chipboard under the wallpaper is made with polymer mixtures. “Concrete contact”, for example, from Ceresit or KNAUF, also works well.

If under the decorative coating was meant not roll material, but liquid wallpaper, still prepare the surface. Firstly, it is not possible to completely mask irregularities with a liquid decor. And secondly, the durability of the coating without first applying a primer and putty will be at risk. By the way, the choice in favor of liquid wallpaper will simplify your decoration a little, if only because it will reduce the list of necessary tools. For their application, you will need the same spatula and grater, with which the walls were puttied.

A few more nuances:

  1. It is undesirable to screw drywall. Such a double cladding will do nothing but reduce the usable area.
  2. Choose glue based on the recommendations of wallpaper manufacturers.
  3. For pasting chipboard, do not buy single-layer wallpaper on a paper basis.
  4. Be sure to sand the surface of the wood boards by removing peeling particles from the surface with the help of sandpaper. Otherwise, the adhesion of the coating to the surface will decrease.
